Kāhui tipua refers to companies or tribes of tipua - supernatural, often gigantic or shape-shifting beings in Māori lore. They appear in migration and landscape stories as previous or parallel inhabitants, sometimes hostile, sometimes simply other. They help explain a world already storied before the most recent human arrangements of the land.
