Amazimu
Also known as: Zimu, Izimu
Basic account
Cannibal ogres of Zulu and related folklore - shape-shifting eaters of the unwary.
Account
Amazimu (singular izimu) are ogre-like beings in Zulu and wider Nguni folklore - often cannibalistic, sometimes shape-shifting, enemies of human order in folktales told to entertain and to warn. They may appear as large men or as more monstrous forms. Cleverness, kinship, and courage defeat appetite in the classic pattern of the tales.
