Stallo is the large, slow, dangerous being of Sámi tradition who hunts people across the winter landscape and is beaten by wit rather than strength. Circular stone foundations across northern Scandinavia are still called Stallo sites.

Chain of custody
The Stállu of Sámi tradition preserves a memory of real outsiders who raided the Sámi: Norse or Christian vikings, robbers and tax collectors, whose iron-clad, plundering violence the tales record and whose abandoned mountain houses are still called Stallo sites.
The raider reading is an interpretation laid over the folk material by scholars, traceable in print from the 1870s, and it is still repeated in reference works while being argued against in specialist literature.
