Rübezahl is an ancient Germanic mountain god, a pre-Christian deity of the Giant Mountains who survived Christianisation as a folk spirit.
The documents on this ladder run back to the sixteenth century, where Rübezahl appears as a named mountain demon rather than as a god, and in the places where an ancient-deity reading is stated it is stated as conjecture.
