Kua Fu decides to race the sun. He runs it down across the sky, drinks the Yellow River and the Wei dry, dies of thirst on the way to the northern lakes, and his staff becomes a forest of peach trees.

The Shanhaijing gives two versions that do not fully agree, including on how Kua Fu dies: one has him killed by the drought-heat, another associates him with a killing by Yinglong, a winged dragon.
