Paul Bunyan is the hyperbole of the North American logging frontier made flesh: a lumberjack so large his footprints became Minnesota's ten thousand lakes, his flapjack griddle greased by skating cooks with hams strapped to their feet, his companion a blue ox named Babe measured in axe-handles between the eyes. He dug Puget Sound as a bay for his ships, straightened crooked roads by hitching Babe to the curves, and logged the Dakotas in a fortnight when the mosquitoes were big enough to breed with eagles.
