When Yu the Great summoned the spirits and lords to control the flood, Fangfeng arrived late and was executed. Later tradition made him a giant of extraordinary height - bones like tree trunks when his tomb was opened in legend. He is a minor figure in the flood-control cycle who became, through anecdote, a measure of ancient stature and of the cost of missing the call.
