Cormoran terrorized Cornwall from his lair on St Michael's Mount, taking cattle and captives as casually as weather takes roofs. Jack, a farmer's son in the chapbook tradition, dug a pit trap, lured the giant with a blast of his horn, and when Cormoran fell in, finished him with a pickaxe. Jack took the giant's treasure and the reputation that would grow into a cycle of further giant-killings.
