Account

Polybotes fled across the Aegean with Poseidon hard behind him when the Gigantomachy broke the world into chase and counter-chase. The sea-god tore a fragment from the island of Kos and hurled it like a discus. The rock buried the giant and became - in the old etymology of myth - the island of Nisyros, a volcanic lid on a defeated body.
