Thrym, a lord among the jötnar, stole Mjölnir - Thor's hammer, the gods' chief defense - and buried it eight leagues under the earth. His bride-price for its return was Freyja herself. When Freyja's rage shook Asgard and her necklace Brísingamen burst its links, Loki devised a plan that the Þrymskviða still tells with a grin: Thor would go to Jötunheim in bridal dress, veiled, with Loki as cunning bridesmaid.
