Alcyoneus was counted among the greatest of the Gigantes - in some tellings the eldest, in others simply the hardest to kill. On the soil of his birthplace, Pallene (or Phlegra), he could not die. Wounds closed. Strength returned. Heracles shot him full of arrows and still he rose, as if the earth itself refused to accept his death.
