In the Valley of Elah, between Socoh and Azekah, the Philistine champion of Gath walked out each morning and evening to shame the ranks of Israel. Goliath's armor is catalogued with the care of a quartermaster: a bronze helmet, a coat of mail weighing five thousand shekels, greaves, a javelin of bronze slung between his shoulders, and a spear whose shaft was like a weaver's beam, its iron head six hundred shekels. Before him went his shield-bearer. For forty days no Israelite answered.
