Tityus, a giant son of Zeus and Elara - or of Gaia, in the version that makes his crime more purely earth-born - attempted to violate Leto, mother of Apollo and Artemis. The twin archers killed him. In Hades he lies stretched over nine plethra of ground while two vultures eternally tear his liver, which grows back for the next day's hunger - a punishment parallel to Prometheus's, but for lust rather than the theft of fire.
