Antaeus, son of Poseidon and Gaia, ruled a stretch of Libya and challenged every stranger to wrestle. The stakes were simple: lose, and your skull would join the roof of a temple to his father. As long as Antaeus touched his mother Earth, his strength returned with every fall; the harder he was thrown, the more terrible he rose. Travelers learned too late that the ground itself was his ally.
