Orion

Basic account

The hunter so great he was set among the stars.

Account

Orion was a hunter of prodigious size and beauty, born in Boeotia by accounts that already sound like campfire excess - in one, three gods visited an old man, urinated on a bull-hide, buried it, and from it Orion rose. He cleared Chios of wild beasts, pursued the Pleiades across the world, and boasted that he would kill every animal on earth. Gaia sent a scorpion to end him; or Artemis struck him; or Apollo tricked his sister into the shot - the poets do not agree on the hand, only on the fall.
