Oni are among the most recognizable yōkai: horned, fang-mouthed, often red or blue-skinned, carrying iron clubs (kanabō). They may punish the wicked in Buddhist hells, raid villages in setsuwa tales, or serve as gatekeepers and obstacles for heroes. Not all oni are simple villains; some stories grant them conversion, pathos, or ambiguous justice.
