Polyphemus, son of Poseidon and the nymph Thoosa, kept flocks on a wild island and knew no assembly, no law, no planted field - only the cave, the cheese-racks, the sheep, and his own hunger. When Odysseus and twelve companions entered seeking guest-gifts, the Cyclops sealed the mouth with a stone no mortal could shift and began to devour the men raw, two at a morning meal, two at night.
