Shuten Dōji

Shuten Dōji ruled a band of oni from a stronghold on Mount Ōe, northwest of the capital. By night his demons raided the region, carrying off young women to a hall of blood and sake. The demon king himself was a drunkard of terrifying charisma - his name evokes the shutting or drinking of sake - and his revels were as famous in story as his cruelty.
