On the road to the stronghold of Útgarðr, Thor, Loki, and their companions met a giant so vast they mistook the thumb of his glove for a hall and slept the night inside it. His name, he said, was Skrymir. His provision-bag could not be opened by Thor's full strength; his snoring shook the forest like a gale. Three times Thor struck him in the head with Mjölnir while he slept; three times Skrymir woke and asked mildly whether a leaf, an acorn, or bird-droppings had fallen on his brow.
