Talos was a bronze giant, forged by Hephaestus - or given by Zeus to Europa - to guard the island of Crete. Three times a day he circled the shores, and when stranger ships approached he hurled boulders until hulls split or captains turned away. He was not flesh in the ordinary sense: an automaton of divine craft, tireless, gleaming, and almost invulnerable.
